CFHM Assistant Chief Val GaleChandler Assistant Fire Chief Val Gale selected for the 2018 Fire Service Executive Development Institute
Chandler Fire, Health & Medical Department Assistant Chief Val Gale has been accepted into the Fire Service Executive Development Institute (FSEDI), the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) recently announced.  The Fire Service Executive Development Institute is a year-long leadership development program created and implemented by the IAFC to provide new and aspiring chiefs with the tools they need to have successful and productive tenures.
Chief Gale competed with new fire chiefs and chief officers from across the country to become a member of the 2018 cohort program. The members of the cohort will meet in the Washington, D.C. area this month for their first six-day session, followed by two additional sessions six months apart. The group will receive mentoring and coaching between sessions and maintain communications through an active online community. Along with being accepted into the program, Chief Gale has been awarded a scholarship to cover expenses for the onsite sessions.
“This FSEDI program will be an excellent opportunity for Val to learn from some of the top fire service leaders and to network and learn with a group of fire chiefs and assistant fire chiefs from all around the nation”, said Chandler Fire Chief Tom Dwiggins. Chief Dwiggins is a graduate of the Institute, serving as a member of the 2016 FSEDI cohort.
Chief Gale first came to work for the City of Chandler in 1997 as a firefighter and has held the positions of engineer, captain, battalion chief, and now assistant chief. He was Fire Fighter of the Year in 2008, Paramedic of the Year in 2002, and Medal of Valor awardee in 1999. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Arizona State University and a Master’s degree in Administration from Northern Arizona University. Chief Gale is a member of the National EMS Advisory Council, board member of the Regional Emergency Medical Services group, and a Healthcurrent Clinical Advisory Council member. He also is a Designated Chief Fire Officer through the Commission on Professional Credentialing.
This is the sixth year that the Motorola Solutions Foundation has provided the IAFC with a grant to fund the program. “Motorola Solutions Foundation recognizes that these challenging times require a new breed of leader to head our local fire departments and national fire service”, said Matt Blakely, Executive Director of Motorola Solutions Foundation. “We’re proud to help support the education of these leaders to ensure they have the skills necessary to meet these complex and emerging issues confronting our communities.”
